Many people only think about the micro side of things when they think of editing: the grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, word selection, and so forth. These all fall into the categories of copyediting, line and stylistic editing, and proofreading. I do all of these.

What I usually do first, however, is assess and address the macro elements of your work. This also known as developmental or structural editing. In nonfiction writing, it includes the way you state your point or points, organize your ideas, and support them with stories or evidence. In the wonderful world of fiction, this is where I look at elements like plot, setting, character development, and all those arcs and loops that make up a good story. It also includes the techniques you use to tell your story: dialogue and description, showing versus telling, all that good stuff.

Good writing – and good editing – considers all of these elements, as well as how they work together to create the most effective connection with your audience.
